Legendary inventor Thomas Edison once said that “the three great essentials to achieve anything worthwhile are hard work, stick-to-itiveness, and common sense.”

Doubtlessly, these traits are still vital. But to succeed as an IT pro, it also takes competence. And that’s why last month, we asked you to share what knowledge areas are essential for today’s IT pros.

As we had hoped, there were plenty of interesting and insightful contributions. Here are some of the knowledge areas that were mentioned:

  • Networking
  • Virtualization
  • Security
  • Cloud Services
  • Container Orchestration
  • Linux
  • Storage
  • Processing
  • Google
  • Stack Overflow
  • General System Administration
  • VMware
  • AWS
  • Azure AD

In addition, our amazing and extremely smart community (that would be YOU) also highlighted three more knowledge areas that are often overlooked in job descriptions, but are absolutely critical for success as an IT pro. These areas are:

  1. Common sense (Thomas Edison would approve!)
  2. Soft skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with end users.
  3. Continuous learning and adapting.

For this latter knowledge area, community member Erin Nail put it very well:“Since IT is constantly changing and evolving, the most important knowledge domain area for IT professionals is the ability to learn and puzzle out solutions to new problems.”

The Winners Are

Firstly, you’re ALL winners, because you’re super-intelligent and intimidating to lesser mortals at parties with your vast expertise (which is part of the fun of being an IT pro, right?). Now, let’s announce the two lucky poll participants who will each receive a $25 Amazon gift card... Congratulations to Darko Bazulj and Stéphane Thinel! Please email me at dsthilaire@devolutions.net to claim your prize.

Stay Tuned

Didn’t win this time? Don’t worry, you’ll have another chance very soon with the October poll — stay tuned!
